ESTRO NEWS LETTER

Two members of the board of directors of SYROG have recently authored two News Letters of ESTRO.

In  the first one Dr. Arturo Navarro from Instituto Catalán de Oncologia (ICO Bellvitge) commented the last young meeting of the ESTRO 30 congress held in London (May 2011). In this letter, Dr. Navarro highlighted the neccesity of knowing the priorities of young physicians in different countries in Europe, and as coordinator of SYROG has suggested the possibility of being the Spanish Group the first in researching this priorities (below you will find the letter enclosed)

               -----------------------------------------------
I would like to thank ESTRO for all the efforts that have been made in approaching young professionals to integrate them in the life of our society.

The Symposium was great, and many good ideas came up but I would like to remark on something that several of the attendants said: the priorities of young professionals are different in different countries and usually individual opinions are not representative of all young professionals in a country.

That’s the reason why I think that a short survey with a international focus about how young professionals feel about ESTRO is a great starting point.

From SYROG (Spanish Young Radiation Oncology Group) we can improve the diffusion of the survey among ESTRO and non ESTRO young members, and discuss specific issues about how Spanish young professional feel about ESTRO and how to improve the involvment in ESTRO.

In the second letter, Dr. Jon Cacicedo, Hospital de Cruces (Barakaldo, Vizcaya),  talks about the great success of the Young ESTRO session that took place in the meeting, with a very high scientific level and a great attendance (below you can read the letter)

              ------------------------------------------------
This June the national congress of  the Spanish radiation Oncology Society  was held in Madrid.
In that congress, the second edition of the Spanish young radiation Oncology Group (SYROG) took place. There were eight oral presentations and two invited speakers, Dr. Sofia Rivera from France and  Dr. De Bari from Italy.
The quality of the presentations were really good and   what stood out most was the interaction between the audience and the speakers, several questions came up and the dialog was made.
Young Spanish speakers showed their skills in English presentations and in handling questions from the jury.
Three prizes were awarded for the best three presentations. The prizes were: First Prize:  ESTRO Course in Europe was given to Rivin, E  for “A different SBRT Method in Lung Tumors : Initial Experience”  and  the Second and Third prizes were a national course in the Spanish Radiation Oncology School given to M López, M  and Lopez Guerra, J, by “Helical Tomotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Cancer “and  HSPB1 RS2868371 Associates with Radiation-Esophagitis in Lung cancer respectively.
Dr. Rivera Sophie spoke about the ESTRO fellow program and what it means for the young radiation oncologist and what ESTRO is doing for them.  The audience´s interested was captured   in the program and in how to combine clinical aspects with research programs.
Dr. De bari spoke about the Italian young society, how it  was born what it has grown into and how it works. Several similarities were found between our young group and the Italian one and a share of common goals.
After the  young session , an informal  meeting was held with our French and Italian guests to present the SYROG blog and all the sections that it contains. Links between our societies and electronic webs were exchanged and some possible future projects were discussed.
In summary it was an interesting and profitable session and invaluable ideas came up. Our desire now is for every one to work together to establish a regular workflow between all the young radiation oncologists and international relations.
  1. Dr. A Navarro.
  2. Dr. J. Cacicedo

ESTRO Anniversary Congress 8-12 May 2011

During the past week the ESTRO Anniversary Congress was held in London.

The programme of the congress explored the advancements that have taken place over the last 30 years in the field of radiation oncology for all major tumour sites and discussed: what evidence has been created to date; the evidence that is currently being created and what will be included in future grant applications. As you would expect from an ESTRO congress, these sessions  included an overview and update on the best clinical trials.
Another important element of the programe was the joint sessions with regional and international oncology societies who joint ESTRO at this international meeting and addressed together topics of high relevance such as: How highly developed technology will change our lives; translating research in imaging into clinical practice; new frontiers in metastatic cancers; and much more.
This Anniversary Congress, labeled the ESTRO International Oncology Forum  complemented the two ESTRO conferences that took place in parallel: the GEC-ESTRO- ISIORT Europe Conference and the 11th Biennial Conference on Physics and Radiation Technology for Clinical Radiotherapy.

Few of the members of SYROG assisted to the meeting and presented interesting abstracts.
Moreover, there was an interesting symposium for young scientists in which all the international young groups participated.

Posted you can find a picture of 2 of the members of the group (Arturo Navarro and myself)  in the Spanish Society of Radiation Oncology (SEOR) stand.

These were the ponents and the presentations done in the Young Symposium:

What has ESTRO done for our young members – J Bourhis, V Valentini, V Gregoire
Expectations from young members regarding science – L Muren
Expectations from young members regarding the profession – D Zips
Expectations from young members regarding education – S Rivera

iPhone apps

We have decided to keep up with the new technologies and the Blog is the first tool towards it. Although I have in mind a post about specific smartphone applications for Radiation Oncology, I have decided to post this video for now. This seems to be the future. In the video Jerimy Brockway gives us a quick demo of Mobile MIM for the iPhone and iPod Touch, a specific software for radiological data sets and image fusion.

Presentation of the Young group

 -------------

This weekend we have done a step forward as a group. The Board of Directors of the SEOR invited us to present the group in the Retreat meeting. Arturo Navarro presented the situation and planning for the gruop, and myself (Alfonso Gomez-Iturriaga) the use of the new technologies for the comunication and diffusion of the group. The result..... really succesfull. From now on, there will be a member of the young group present in all the Board of Directors meetings.
